The war didn’t start over night, this took time to happen. Between hardships, disasters and accomplishments, the process was long. Some of the Causes of the War include:
-1835, Many Americans traveled and moved to Texas, which at the time was part of the Spanish colony of Mexico.
-1812, Until then Spain had the border closed to Americans, but in 1812 Moses Austin was granted a large amount of Texas. When he died his son continued to allow many people to continue moving to this area.
-1830, Mexico passed a law forbidding anymore Americans to settle in Texas.
Knowing some of the problems we have now days, I really don’t see this law as fair. With the problems we have with immigration, would it be fair for us to say “No more Mexicans allowed to live in the U.S.”?
-1835, Santa Anna threw out Mexican constitution and planned to drive out all Americans out of Texas.
Between the many fights and treaties, some of the effects include:
- The battles at Alamo and Goliad were both won by Mexico, but many were killed and slaughtered.
-Santa Anna was captured and forced to sign a treaty for Texas’ independence. Texas declared independence from Mexico March 2, 1836.
- 1840, U.S. allowed Texas to join, 1845, they were admitted into the Union.
-1848, Mexico signed treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, forced to give California and New Mexico to the U.S. The U.S. paid Mexico $15 millionand agreed to respect Spanish people.
Over all, the two countries were able to work things out between. In a way I can understand why Mexico would be upset with so many outsiders moving there. Sometimes it can be just to much. But I still get the feeling of, “well if I can’t do that, then why can they??”
