For the assigned blog this week, Shelbie and I watched Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Bruno, the boy on the left, has a father who is in charge of a work camp for Jews. They move to a house that is close to the camp, but the camp is not visible from the house. Or so they think. It all starts when Bruno looks out his bedroom window and sees what he thinks is a farm, but it is the camp. He asks his mom why the farmers wear pajamas. Bruno then notices that his family slave, who is a Jew, is wearing the "pajamas" and he asks his mom about them again. He still has no clue about the camp.
He starts to explore out in the woods behind his house and comes upon the outside fence of the camp and that is where he meets Shmuel, the boy on the right in the picture. Shmuel happens to be the same age as Bruno. Shmuel explains to Bruno that he is Jewish and the soldiers have been putting Jews into these camps. They meet continuosly for the next few days.
Later in the movie, Shmuel tells Bruno his father has gone missing in the camp. Bruno thinks it would be a good idea to sneak into the camp and help look for Shmuel's dad. Shmuel brings Bruno a pair of "pajamas" and they dig a hole under the fence for Bruno to sneak under. Once he is inside, the go look for Shmuel's father in their hut. Almost as soon as they are inside, soldiers come in and demand everyone gets out and marches. Everyone is forced into a small building that resembles a locker room and are told to undress themselves.
Not knowing what is going on, the just assume they will be taking a shower. They head into a smaller, dark room and the door is locked tightly behind them. By this time, Bruno's family is searching frantically for him and his father, the one running all this, is running through the camp looking for him. But, it was already to late. Bruno, Shmuel, and the other men in the "shower" with them had already been gassed and are dead.
-This was not the first time I had watched the movie, but this was the first time I had actually sat down and actually payed attention to what was going on. This movie is very very sad. And to know what people in these camps go through is just horrible. Mainly all because of one person, Hitler, who didn't like Jews....
