Tuesday- Adolf Hitler- born in 1889 in Austria, family moved to Germany when he was three, had five siblings- three died in infancy, mom-Klara dad-Alois. Germany, Italy, and Japan were main powers. Swatstika definition-. Treaty of Versailles. Germany's army was reduced and they lost a lot of land and cities. war guilt clause-. Hitler's brother Edmund died in 1900, after his brothers death hitler changed and became more moody and withdrawn. He had more issues at school and with his dad, his dad then died in 1903 and his mom died in 1907. all three of these deaths had a huge impact on the young hitler, and in Mein Kampf, Hitler said he first became anti-Semitic during his time in Vienna, Austria. Jews were hated because they were known as immigrants and jews in the bible were the ones who killed Jesus, and Jews had a lot of money and had control of the banking systems so a lot of people did not like them. Hitler struggled in school. When Hitler was about 16 Hitler moved to Vienna, Austria (1905-1913). Hitler failed to get into the academy of fine arts in Vienna two different times. He also failed into getting into the Austro-Hungarian army in 1914. He moved to Munich, Germany and joined the Germany army when WWI broke out in 1914. Hitler in WWl Hitler was wounded twice while serving, injured by a shell explosion, temporarily blinded by a mustard gas attack, and there is a story that Hitler could have been shot by the French Soldier Henry Tandy, but was spared. After WWl Hitler starts spying on the new nationalist socialist German workers party (Nazi) for the German military. Hitler quickly realized that this group discussed topics that he believed in, Hitler dropped out of the military and joined the Nazi party and quickly rose to become the leader, Hitler found out that he had the power of speech and persuasion during this time. Beer Hall Putsch- 1923 was unsuccessful and got attacked and Hitler was put on trial and it benefited him. Hitler used his speaking skills to get himself out of death penalty and was supposed to serve for 5 years but only served 9 months because of good behavior. While in prison Hitler wrote Mein Kampf (my battle/my struggle). Hitler is appointed Chancellor in 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg dies shortly after and Hitler dissolves the weimer republic. The great depression set in a second time and it helped the Nazi's group grow. Early Actions of Hitler: drops out of the league of nations, starts rearming Germany army, and rearms the Germany Rhineland area (great France run away because they don't want war). Anschluss with Austria 1938-
Wednesday- Sudentenland Crisis (1938)- "Re-uniting German speaking peoples" Munich Conference (1938)- The 4 guys are the conference where Neville Chamberlain- Great Britain, Adolf Hitler- Germany, Benito Mussolini- Italy, Edouard Daladier-France. Munich Conference-- Chamberlain: "Peace for our time". Hitler was given the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia, Hitler promised that he was done taking over territories, Hitler wanted to re-unite all German speaking people, and became know as thee "Policy of Appeasement". Winston Churchill opposed appeasement (But no one listened to him because of previous actions). Hitler takes over all of Czechoslovakia in March of 1939. Czech president Hacha's (had heart disease and had to go by train instead of plane) meeting with Hitler in March, 1939. Hitler screams and claims that if the Czech won't give up their land then Hitler will take over and the president passed out. Bomb shell: Soviet-German non Aggression Pact, August 1939, Russia (soviet union) gave raw materials to Germany in exchange for money and weapons. Both agreed to stay neutral if the other entered the war, And they secretly agreed to invade and split Poland, Germany would get the western half and USSR the eastern half, Russia would get Finland, Estonia, and Latvia and Germany would get Lithuania. Everyone was shocked, especially Poland was stuck :between a rock and a hard place. Hitler thought it would force great Britain and France to back out of their promise to help Poland if attacked. Poland had weak military and was attacked by both sides Germany and soviet union. Sitzkrieg- The Phony War- winter 1939-1940 (nothing happened during the winter so people thought the wars were fake but really everyone was just waiting until winter was over) Denmark, norway, lexingburg, belgum, france,
Thursday- Denmark was easy, Norway was harder because they are surrounded by water and German navy was hit hard. Belgium, lexingberg, and france was taken over. The "impenetrable Maginot Line (no one can get through this wall). Throughout June Germany took over France with Italy. Miracle of Dunkirk. In Dunkirk they got to have British and french people to escape back to great Britain (helped save the war). France surrenders to Germany on June, 1940. A divided France, The Vichy Government, there were two french governments. The first one was not allies with us and it was run by Henri Petain in Vichy. The other free french we were allies with us and they were called the free french underground, there general was charles Degaulle and their goal was to free france. Tripartite pact is signed- axis powers in 1940. Axis invasion of the Balkans (yugoslavia) in 1941. Great britain was all by themselves being the only country not owned. Nazi goals for battle of Britain- destroy the royal air force (before incasion was possible hopefully by 9-15 of 1940), attack and destroy the British Navy, Attack british troops, once air control was gained; the invasion of the Great Britain would begin. Germany never succeeded in achieving #1 and german bombers did so poorly against the RAF that they started bombing that night only. Night bombing is scary especially for Britain because everything got bombed. Great britain was aided heavily by the radar and Ultra (british code name for decifering and intercept enemies information)
