Ronald Reagan was the 40th president of the United States of America. He had many accomplishments before becoming president. He was the Governor of California, spokesman for General Electric, and an actor. He was also involved in many things during his presidency such as the end of the Cold War and, the one I will be focusing on today, the bombing of Libya.
Libya is the only country in the world to have a flag that is one solid color with nothing else on it. Their flag is green. Libya is the 17th largest country in the world. Libya is home to over 6,173,579 people.
Operation El Dorado Canyon or the bombing of Libya took place on April 15, 1986. The United States and Libya had not been getting along for quite a while. The US wanted to send a message to Libya about supporting international terrorism. In March of 1986 the U.S. sent a carrier task force to the region of Libya and they responded aggressively.Ronald Reagan spent many hours out of many days discussing the situation with European and Arab partners and on April 14 he ordered the attack. The U.S. sent many aircrafts and aircraft carriers to hopefully weaken Libya’s ability to train terrorists. The attack lasted approximately ten minutes with several targets being hit and destroyed.40 Libyan people were killed by the air attack along with two captains of the United States. In response to the air attack Libya launched missiles at the U.S. coastguard which exploded short of the targets. I am glad that we do not have as much war now in the United States as we did back then. Like I have said in previous blogs I am terrified of war and would be scared out of my mind.Respectfully Submitted,2Jennifer
