American history is filled with many different kinds of people who did such wonderful and amazing things; people of all races and all genders. History isn’t just dedicated to the blacks and the men it is also dedicated to many important women. This month we recognize those women and send our thanks to the many that helped America become the country we are today. Today this blog goes out to Harriet Tubman, an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and union spy during the Civil War.
She was born to slave parents and this is why her exact birth date was not recorded. She reported herself to be born in the year of 1825. It was hard growing up in a family that was constantly being torn apart. Her family tried very hard to stay together, but it was really tough. She had eight siblings. Three of her sisters were sold, tearing her family apart forever. Harriet was in charge of taking care of her younger brother and a baby since her mother as assigned to working in the “big house”.In 1849 Harriet became sick and her slave value dissolved. She tried to escape twice and the second time she succeeded. She traveled with the Underground Railroad by night to avoid the eyes of slave owners. After she arrived in Pennsylvania she began making efforts to save money to return home to free her family. She soon returned home and brought her family and many other slaves to freedom. She returned again and again for eleven years. She rescued approximately 70 slaves. She also provided directions for 50-60 other slaves on how to escape to the North. She used many strategies and freed many people.
Our hats go off to you Harriet Tubman. Blacks are free today due to the effort she and many others made. History is important to the United States; without it our country would not be the place it is today.
