To start off, the definition of lynching is when a group or a mod punishes either a group of people or just a person. It its usually done to limit a certain type of population. How this is involved in African American History Month is that people would do this to blacks in our country. Not everyone liked blacks, as we all know, and so people would hang them. This an example of lynching.
Lynching in our country's history mainly took place in the south. When it really came about was when the Civil War was over and slavery had become abolished and black men were given the right to vote. In 1870 this was stepped up a notch because that was when the south men had been given more power. Therefore they had more say in things and they were obviously for lynching so that's why that time of the century was the worst.
Between 1860 and 1890 about 5,00 African Americans had been lynched. Some white people participated in the lynching of African American and some just watched or witnessed it and never took any steps towards stopping the practice of lynching.
Later on there were bills that were made in an attempt to ban lynching, but the south did not let that fly. Eventually it did become illegal and is now a crime to lynch people. This covers all states of the United States. I think that it is very unfortunate that people even thought of trying to solve their problems like this. I don't think that I could ever witness this and not be able to have the urge to try and stop this.
