Rwanda's People

Rwanda Map

Rwanda Genocide was a mass killing of thousand of Rwanda Tutsis and Hutu political members in 1994 by the Hutu government. The killing of the people went through the middle of July till a total of 5000,000 and 1,000,000 people were killed. That was more then 20% of the country’s population.Rwanda’s people have always have had a lot of ethnic tension between the two groups. Even though they do not get along at all; they have a lot in common. They speak the same language, inhabit the same areas and follow all most the same traditions. The Rwanda Genocide started with the assassination of Juvenal Habyarimana of April 6, 1994.His plane was shot down about the Kigali Airport. Hours later the country was filled with violence and the Rwanda Genocide had actually begun. And did not end till about three months later.Tutsis bodies were thrown into the rivers. The killer said that they were being sent back to their original country Ethiopia. When Belgium colonists went to Rwanda they considered the Tutsis to be "superior" and not the Hut. Anger was building up in the Hutu people and they decided to kill more than 20,000 Tutsis in 1959 and send them back to their countries. In August 1993, there were many attacks because of the Rwanda Patriotic Front or the RPF and now the dead president Habyarimana. But that did not matter because he passed away a few weeks after. The people who shot the plane down is still unknown. Everybody was taking part in the Rwanda Genocide, police officers and soldiers convinced ordinary citizens to take part in the massacre and even people who were bribed with money, food and land. The United Nations troops withdrew after 10 of their soldiers were murdered. Finally in July, the RPF claimed Kigali and over 2 million Hutu people fled to Zaire.
