blog 16

I'm doing my blog on the weapons that were used during World War One. A major weapon that was mostly used in trenches by British soldiers, was the rifle. A rifle is a firearm that is supposed to be fired from a soldiers shoulder. In one minute fifteen rounds could be fired at a person up to 1400 meters away and they could be killed. Another destructive weapon required four to six men to opperate them, this was a machine gun. A machine gun could fire very fast and repeatadly and also had the power of 100 guns! I'd say thats a lot and I couldnt imagine getting fired at by one of those things. Large field guns, which are some what like machine guns, needed twelve men to work and the guns fired shells which fired on impact.

A sort of sad weapon used during World War One was gas. It reminds me of Hitler and how he killed the Jews. The first to use gas was the German army which they used chlorine gas. Gas is something I could never imagine getting killed by, it just sounds terrible. Gas caused a burning sensation in your throat and you pretty much suffocate. Mustard gas, hmm charming, was the most deadliest kind of gas. One, I hate mustard, two, I hate gas. That would be horrid. Mustard gas was fired into trenches and it caused pucking, internal and external bleeding, and blistering of the skin. The worst part of mustard gas for the soldiers it was aimed at, it could take up to 5 weeks to have a complete effect, death.Blimps, otherwise called Zeppelins, were an easy target in the sky and ended up not being used much towards the end of the war. They carried bombs during bombing raids and also machine guns. Tanks were first used in this World War. Although tanks can only reach speeds of about 4 or 5 miles per hour, they were very mighty. The first tank required 3 people to work it, then a later, more modern tank, was introduced later during the war and could carry 10 soldiers. The more modern tanks also had a revolving turret to make shooting more easy.

Planes were first used during the war for spying and delivering bombs and supplies and such. Later planes had machine guns on them along with bombs and on rare occassions, cannons. Dogfights were when two planes were in the sky were in a fight. Submarines had a very nice advantage in the water, torpedoes. The Germans used them to blow ships up carrying supplies from America and Britain. Something I actually did not know, which may or may not seem like a good fact to know about World War One, but I didn't know Germans torpedoed an American passenger liner in 1915 which killed a little over 1,000 lives. We were very mad about it and decided to join the war in 1917.
