What do Shoshone, Navajo, Sioux, Blackfoot, and Apache all have in common? They are all Indian Tribes. The Native Americans were the first people to call America home. The Native Americans were people who lived by the land. They beleived that they should be in one with nature. They did not beleive that men dominated nature, but that they were equal. The first contact with the Native Americans was in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. Columbus befriended them, and he had no bad intentions. The friendly relations with the Native Americans began to go bad during his second voyage, for the Spanish were trying to conquer the Americas. War broke out between the Spaniards and certain indian tribes on the island of Hispianola in 1494. It was odd that war was not created with all of the tribes on the island, but some of the natives accepted the Spanish Rule and Christianity without a fight. In 1496 the Spanish sent 300 Native American prisoners to be sold as slaves. In Spain during this period of time slavery was only legal under certain circumstances; the person had to be a prisoner of war. When Columbus sent them to Spain to be sold King Fernando and Queen Isabel were totally against this so the Indians were immediately sent back to Hispaniola and were never sent back to Spain. When people started setteling into the thirteen colonies disease started spreading, the Native American population started to die down. Today there are many indian reservations across the country. There are more modern indian tribes, but some still live by the land to keep the tradition of their ancestors alive now and for generations to come.
