Bessemer Steel Process

Oil was a popular natural resource around 1887. But, it was not the only one. Coil and Iron were found as well. Iron ore was found in Minnesta along the Mesabi Range. The Mesabi Range is a 100 mile long, 3 mile wide, Iron range. Coil production began to rise by 217 million tons within 30 years.Iron is a dense metal. It is soft but it can also break and rust. Iron contains carbon which makes it heavier. If you remove the Carbon from Iron, it become light, flexible, and less likely to rust. This metal is now called Steel. Henry Bessemer and William Kelly developed the Bessemer Process because steel materials were available, an efficient manufacturing process needed to be developed. More then 90 percent of the nations steel was produced by 1880.Steel was used for railroads. Also, they used steel for the base of a skyscraper. I thought this was pretty interesting to learn about. The production of steel and history.
