Battle of the Mediterranean

My topic for our next project is Italian/Mediterranean Front.

The Mediterranean Sea

I chose to blog about the Battle of the Mediterranean. It was a name given to the naval campaign fought in the Mediterranean Sea. The battle took place in WWII it was fought by the Italian Royal Navy, who were supported by the Axis Naval Forces, and the British Royal Navy, who were supported by the Allied Naval Forces. The Axis forces were, Italian Navy, Air Force and Army, German Navy (u-boat force), Air Force and Army. The Allied forces were, British Navy, Air Force and Army, Australian Navy, Air Force and Army , New Zealand Navy, Air Force and Army, Greek Navy, Air Force and Army, French (at the beginning; later they were neutral), United States (at the end).

The Italian leader Benito Mussolini thought that the Mediterranean was their sea. This is also what the Royal Navy thought, causing battle at sea. The British and French navies dominated the Mediterranean and it was not until June 1940 when France surrendered that the balance was to change because too many of the French ships were under Axis control.

Benito Mussolini

The Italian Royal Navy and the British Royal Navy both had three main goals of this battle. First goal was to attack the supply of the other side. Second goal was to keep their own supply lines open to their armies in North Africa. The third and final goal was to take away the ability of the opposing navy waging war at sea. The Italians had no radar and little fuel. In the late 1940’s Germany started giving the Italians fuel.

I chose this blog because it made the most sense to me. I am a little confused on our topic and this battle I understood. I found a lot of good information and it was easy to throw together. I also found a neat link. ( see below)
