First, I would like to give an update on Rifqa Bary's case. If you do not remember, Rifqa is the 17-year-old girl who converted to Christianity, and now her parents are threatening to kill her. Rifqa is still in Florida for now, and waiting to hear if she will have to return to her family in Ohio.A baby was born in India's Bihar state on Thursday with his heart outside of his body. Most babies born with this condition die within hours of being born, but this case is different.AIIMS
Vibha Devi, the newborn, was rushed to Delhi, India by a 24-hour train ride with his father and grandfather. The trip was 800 miles. They went to Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The baby was born with the condition known as Ectopia Cordis, which means the heart is placed outside the body when born. The baby has an infection and is being treated, and then he will undergo surgery. Since the mother had a C-section, she was not able to go to Delhi, and the father and grandfather are holding many vigils. The baby’s parents are not in a very good financial situation, so doctors are treating Vibha at no cost. There are five surgeons ready to operate, if Vibha survives the next couple weeks. “The surgery is a multi-layered procedure and might take months,” said the doctor of Vibha. Also, no baby in India born with this condition has survived. The doctors will have to create space and the chest wall has to be reconstructed.
I hope that Vibha will be the first baby to survive this condition, and I think that the doctors are able to do it, if he survives the next couple weeks. He has a very rare condition, and I hope he can say in the future he was the first to survive.Sarah Konz
