Monday-Started presentations. Tuesday Bruns went over his ppt and we reviewed about Italy. Didn't have class Wednesday because of early out. Thursday presentations. Friday was gone.
Italy-
1. Major events that impacted their country between WWI and WWII. Italy was mad about WW1-Treaty of Versailles. Wanted to become a world power again. Restoring the Roman Empire. Italy helped with the Spanish Civil War. Italy’s unpreparedness for WW2. Rome-Berlin axis agreement to work together.
2. Discuss basic facts: alliance, total casualties, total cost, war goals, etc
Death Count- 410,000 and 330,000 Military. Spent 94 billion. Goals-Very similar to Germany, wanted world power recreate “the Roman Empire” allied with Germany.
3. Tell us about their leader(s) during WWII
Benito Mussolini- How he gained power? Formed a fascist group in Italy. Marched to Rome, threatening government. Became Prime Minister. How he lost power? Voted out by his own Grand Council. Seemed as if he wanted out. New Prime Minister was Pietro Badoglio.
Victor Emmanuel III- How he gained power? Became king because of family. How he lost power? Public opinion forced a vote- Monarchy of Republic. V.E. III voted monarchy lost. Later he died.
4. Discuss the impact of their Home front and propaganda and what it was like in their country during the war. Homefront- Laborers lower. Everyone not in the war worked. Daily bombing. Propaganda- Anti British and Western. Pro Germany, wanted people to join the SS army. Nationalism.
Discuss major battle strategies- Fascism-strong nationalism, led by a dictator. Government had all control. Didn’t want to fight a two front war. Too ambitious. North Africa-Libya. Aided Germany in most affairs.

Benito Mussolini- Wanted to be like Hitler. Allied with Germany. Wanted to be a world power like Germany. Dictator of Italy until 1943. Forced into war. Shot on April 28, 1945 in Giulio di Mezzegra.
Pietro Badoglio- Chief of Staff of Italian Army (1940) Replaced Mussolini. First Prime Minister of Non Fascist Government. Signed armistice with allies.
Arturo Riccardi- Chief of staff of the navy. Forced to step down with Mussolini. Succeeded by Raffaele De Courten.
Vittorio Ambrosio- Italian army chief of staff. Allies did not trust him.
-Discuss why they won or lost the war- Were not ready to fight. Forced into war. Small and weak army.

How Italy helped the allies- provided more troops. Brought allies closer to Germany and the axis powers.

Washington Naval Conference- 5 Power Pact- they looked at the war. Militarism big problem. Designed to stop the buildup for their navies. Countries that signed on this: GB, US, Japan, France, and Italy. It limited the construction of battleships.
9 Power Pact- Guaranteed Chinese independence and upheld the open door policy. Signed by the US, Japan, China... Open door policy all countries would agree to have free trading rights with China.
King Victor Emmanuel- Asked Mussolini to take over power in Italy to keep the communist out of Italy.
Fascism-one person has all power.
Kellogg-Briand Pact- Countries pledged not to use war as a way to settle disputes. If people went by this war would never happen. War is never good.
