Australian Mother Imprisoned for Starvation of Daughter

It seems that every time I embark on a free choice blog, to report on an issue within the world, I am saddened by the state of things around us. I hear stories of death; bombings, murders, torture, and stories of unrivaled pain. They pass before my eyes, a ghost longing to be recognized for more than a moment, an impression holding space in hostility. It is these stories that could make a soul jaded or distrustful; stories that could kill the innocent sparkle that is so precious, yet prominent in so few.The story I plan to report upon in the next few moments differs not in tone nor mood, yet follows the pattern and displays the unfortunate depravity of what humans can sometimes become. I hope that it can inspire some to reach out or rise above the horrid possibilities that can arise in the most unsuspecting people. I hope that maybe, some one will, at the very least, take this story to heart and be a little gentler because of it. For we all know the pain of losing a life, even one that was long and lived to the absolute fullest. We all know the gut-wrenching sadness that follows the news of an adult death, yet when a child, innocent and harmless, dies in a senseless act of depravity, one cannot express the inner pain.Yet, a senseless death was delivered to seven year old Ebony from Sydney, Australia, whose last name has been withheld to protect the identities of her three, living, siblings. In November, 2oo7, this innocent child died a slow and painful death at the hand of her parents. She went through one of the worst documented cases of malnutrition the area, weighing only 20 pounds at the time of her death. The act has been dubbed unimaginably heartless and cruel, a death without reason or purpose, and a sickening blow to humanity as a whole.

The parents, now recently given their sentences, had no reason to inflict such pain upon such a small and sweet child. They took away the possibility of a great leader, a great contributor to the Earth, and forced her to endure pain that she simply could not fight. The mother, 36, has been sentenced to life in prison, for being the main contributor to the child’s death. The father, however was also found guilty and sentenced to 16 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after 12.

I don’t personally feel that these sentences are harsh enough. These two horrid souls will continue to live, continue to eat and smile if they so choose. Ebony can’t. She went through an excruciating pain at the young age of seven, whilst her parent’s only punishment it to live on a constricted schedule. I don’t feel that justice has been done for this girl, I feel that even in death, she has been failed.
