WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT TODAY....US Constitution-two things it does1. Protects our rights(first ten amendments- right to _______)2. Sets up the three branches of gov't-legislative-executive-judicialWashington's Presidency-first president, great leader-john adams ran against Washington, ended up being vice-stepped down after two terms (eight years)-president can be president ten years- (if someone dies)-washington set the serving presidency for two terms-made a treaty with the spanish about the mississippi about tradePRESIDENT- when someone does something that everyone will follow in the future-washington warned we shouldn't have political partiesJefferson vs. Hamilton-washington usually sided with hamilton-jefferson(states power, small gov't) and hamilton butted heads(city focused, large federal gov't)Thomas Jefferson-1801-1809-third president-author of declaration of independence-goal: get rid of national debt; lower taxes-louisiana purchase-lewis and clark-founder of university of west virginia?-common man-beleived less gov't is best-good presidentAndrew Jackson-good president-native american policy:-fought in the french and indian war-was a veteran-became a u.s. hero after saving new orleans-1824 lost presidential election to john quincy adams because there was a corrupt bargain the votes were split in four equal ways, many american voters wanted jackson- they beleived he was better for the common people-born poor in a jog cabin-1828 won election, invited common people to come to the white house, end of the night white house ruined-equality-broke restrictions on voters-1832 elected then-favored the spoil system, led to a lot of corruption by the late 1800's-tried to get rid of electoral college-president during trail of tears: moved cherokee indians west to oklahomaHow the US Acquired Land in 1800's-thirteen colonies, people from britain-treaty with france for florida-lousiana purchase, pay french-mexican american was for land in south west-texas was independent country for short time-oregan and washington from britain-alaska from russia
