Tuesday- Mr. Bruns started to talk about his top 10. We will have a test Friday. Some of his topics were: Land bridge- the first people to come to America, they came over into Alaska following the animals. The land bridge is no longer there because it was covered in water when the glaciers melted. Christopher Columbus wanted to find a faster trade route to Asia but ended up in the Americas. Columbus wanted to go west to get to Africa faster.
Wednesday- Revolutionary War: Britain forced taxes, Boston Tea Party, Boston Massacre, Soldiers came in to people home and ate and slept.
US Constitution- Living document that still affects us today. Protects our Rights. Sets up the U.S Government and the three branches: Executive, Legislative, Judicial
Thursday- Alamo: every single Texan man was killed, the woman and children were let go to tell others that they need to surrender or they will face the same death. States such as Nevada, California, and Arizona were a part of Mexico at one point and we bought them for $20 million. After the Civil War we had to rebuild relationships and cities that were destroyed in combat. African Americans who were now free from plantations didn't have anywhere to go because their only talents were farming. The 15th amendment gave black males the right to vote. Jim Crow laws mad it so blacks and whites had separate everything such as water fountains, bathrooms, and schools.
Friday- Women's rights: women pushed that children shouldn't have to work until a certain age. They also pushed that there be no alcohol and that women had more rights. Missouri Compromise- Missouri wanted to come in as a slave state. Maine is a free state, there was a line of states that were free and slave states. Compromise of 1850- slaves would escape to the north on the Underground Railroad, Southerners would sometimes take random blacks back to the south with them even though the black was a free man.
