This is the first assigned web log of many in a long year in Brun's US History class. Everyone was given a topic to blog upon. He snaked through the class as we all eagerly received our number. My eyes grew wide as I heard "three" when he pointed at me.
3. List the major countries(including main explorers) that explored the New World and where they settled.
Portugal- Focused on finding a sea route to Asia, which finally happened in 1492 in a voyage led by Vasco da Gama. Another notable explorer is Ferdinand Magellan (First voyage around world by European). Portugal settled in Brazil and other African countries.
Spain- Spain's intentions were to merely race to the 'Far East' before Portugal, but instead he discovered the Americas inadvertently. Notable explorers include Christopher Columbus (Discovered New World), Amerigo Vespucci (Whom America is named after), and Juan Ponce de Leon (First European to explore Florida). Spain settled in the Southwest United States and Latin America.
France- The French moved west in attempt to reach the Pacific Ocean and expand their riches. A notable explore would be Giovanna da Verrazano, who explored Florida and Newfoundland when searching for the Northwest Passage. France ended up settling in Canada and areas around New Orleans and the Great Lakes.
England- King Henry VII instructed a trip across the Atlantic Ocean to reach Asia after he had heard of the success of Spain and Portugal. The voyage was led by John Cabot, and he reached Newfoundland in a fashion similar to Christopher Columbus. Notable explorers include Sir Francis Drake (First Englishman to circumnavigate the world). England obviously resided to the East Coast, which led to them forming the 13 colonies.

This is what they think the beautiful Christopher Columbus looked like.
