The Black Panthers Party for Self-Defense was created in Oakland California in October 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. The BP practices military self-defense for minority communities to protect them from the U.S. government and tried to revolutionize socialism though mass community based programs and mass organization. The black panthers were one of the first parties to use military means for ethnic minority and working class equality.
In May of 1967 the party marched fully armed on the capital of California to protest the outlawing of carrying a loaded firearm. The police responded by arresting 30 armed panthers and Bobby Seale (one of the founders). Huey Newton, the panthers Defense Minister, was arrested in October 1967 for the murder of an Oakland police officer. The party would devote much of their attention on a movement called “Save Huey” which was created by panther Eldridge Cleaver. In 1968 Stokely Carmichael, who was formally the chairmen for the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee and an advocate for the nationally known Black Power, became the Prime Minister for the Panther Party.
On April 6, 1968 Bobby Hutton was shot and killed after his house was set on fire. He ran out of his flaming house and was shot ten times by Oakland police. Mr. Hutton was killed two days after Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. Two months after Bobby’s murder Robert Kennedy who was recognized in the minority community as being one of the only politicians in the US “sympathetic “to civil rights is assassinated.
