This week for the World War 2 movie we watched Saving Private Ryan in a small group. My group consisted of Austin Cuddie-Hudson and Austin Mumm. Saving Private Ryan is an award winning movie released in early 1998 and is directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie begins on June 6, 1944 which is also known as D-Day. It was early in the morning and the Americans were invading Omaha Beach. As the Americans drew nearer to the shore Germany's began to open fire and take down American Rangers. Many Rangers in the back of the boat jump out of the boat to avoid bullets but many drown because of there heavy equipment.
After the mass destruction of D-Day we learn that three of the four Ryan brothers have died at almost the same time. The one Ryan brother that is still alive, James Francis Ryan, is with the 101st Airborne Division but his location is not known. After telling the Ryan mother about the fatalities of her three sons the Cheif of Staff of the Army demands that they find James Ryan for his mother. The Cheif orders that they hunt for Ryan until they find him or are killed. The small group of eight soldiers do not agree with the Cheif's orders. They dont believe they should risk eight lives just in search of one. In the end they agree to search for James Ryan in an attempt to bring him home safely to his mother.
The small group of Rangers searching for Ryan run accros a French village where they find their first unit of the 101st. While in the village one American Ranger dies due to a German sniper. The group asked a officer if he knew where Ryan was. He pointed him out to them but after breaking the news to him they found out that it was the wrong Ryan. The Rangers then continued there search for the real James Francis Ryan.
After a while the Rangers came across a downed plane from the 101st Airborne Division. As the sugron treated injured paratroopers the rest of the group searched through the bag of dogtags but were unseccesful in finding Ryans name. After talking to some men by the downed plane they found someone who knew James Ryan. He said that Ryan was defending an important bridge so the Rangers when in search of him. On the way to the bridge the surgon is shot by a German machine gun and dies.
The Rangers then continue on the search after they take out a German half track. After they destroyed the half track they finally found Ryan near Ramelle and told him about his brothers dying and that he was suppose to go home with them. After a minute of thinking Ryan refuses to abandon his buddies and the bridge he is defending. Miler and his group of Rangers decides to stay and help defend the bridge also.
The Germans then come big tanks and armored vehicals in a fight for the town. When all was said and done most of the Rangers die including Miller. Before dying Miller told Ryan not to take his life for granted and to live a good life. The movie then ends with Ryan when he is old in front of Caption Miller's grave.
I think this movie is really great. Saving Private Ryan is realistic throughout the whole movie showing great detail. I think the movie really shows the struggles that solders face while at war. After watching this movie i understand why soldiers have a hard time dealing with natural life after coming back from a war.
