Assigned blog post- the movie Windtalkers

Megan, Chelsea, Amanda, and I watched the movie Windtalkers. Joe Enders is the main character, he is U.S. marine while fighting against Japanese forces. While in battle he was trying to help one of his injured friends when a grenade knocked him unconscious. He then goes to a field hospital where he recieves a purple heart. He recovered from the explosion except he was deaf in one ear. He was ready to go back to war but they would not allow him to go unless he could hear out of both ears. While they checked his hearing one of the pharmacists helped him cheat on the hearing test because she felt sorry for him not being able to go to war.

He goes back to war and is promoted to sergeant. His task is to watch after a Navajo code talker. Ben is the code talker, he is a Navajo indian. He was not allowed to let the enemy recieve their codes and if they came close to it they would have to be killed to protect the codes from the Japanese. The first battle that Ben is in he gets shocked at all the deaths happening around him and he doesnt believe how Joe just kills the Japanese. Ben doesnt kill the Japanese because he is scared to.

The radio that is on Ben's back gets destroyed when fired at. So they have no way to contact anyone and the American artillery people are firing at them without knowing. He knows they need to stop firing at them but he has to contact with them. He believes that he looks like a Japanese troop so he steals the clothes of a Japanese and takes Joe with him to the Japanese radio. Ben pretends that Joe is being help hostage while they make their way to the Japanese radio. He then kills the ones gaurding the radio and radios the artillery unit and tells them to stop firing at them and to fire at the Japanese. When they get back Joe recieves a Silver Star for saving his marines but then he gives it to the mail carrier to send back to one of the marine's wife.

They then go to a Japanese village and make their camp there. Somehow the Japanese troops know they are there and invade them. One of the marines using a flamethrower gets shot and the tanks explode making him start on fire. Joe decides to shoot him until he dies so he doesnt have to suffer being on fire. Whitehorse is another code talker who gets capture by Japanese troops and Joe is forced to throw a grenade and kill him so the Japanese troops dont capture the codes. When Ben returns from being at the headquarters he discovers the Joe had to kill Whitehorse. Ben gets angry and threatens to kill Joe but other marines stop him.

Ben loses the radio which they needed to call in air support to destroy the guns that the Japanese soldiers are using. Ben and Joe both get shot and are surrounded by Japanese soldiers. Ben tells Joe to kill him so the code is safe. But Joe refuses and carries him to safety. Ben then calls air support and they destroy the guns and saves the marines. Joe was shot in the chest while saving Ben and Ben tries to save Joe but he dies.

I learned alot from this movie. I learned that U.S. code talkers had to be shot if they were captured by the enemy so they could save the code. I also learned that there were many battles during World War 2. And I learned that even trained marines make mistakes that may put their own lives at risk. This movie was a good World War 2 movie to learn from. It talked alot about how difficult the war was and how two people could become friends even if they are not welcome at first. I would recomend this movie if you wanted to learn a bit about World War 2.
