Indira Gandhi
Indira Gandhi was the fourth prime minister of india. She served from 1966 to 1997 and again in 1980. She was the second longest serving prime minister of india. She was the child of the first indian prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. As her father was served as prime minister Indira served as chief of staff for her fathers centralised administration. In 1959 she was elected as congress president. In 1964 her father died and she didn’t want to go into the congress party so she became cabinet minister.
In 1966 she defeated Morarji Desai and became the prime minister of India. She was known for her centralisation of power and her political ruthlessness. To support the independence movement she went to war with Pakistan and won. This lead to the creation of Bangladesh. In 1975-1977 she ruled with decree and made changes to the India constitution. In 1984 she was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguard because she ordered the storming of a Sikh holy temple. She impacted woman a lot becuase she was on of the first Woman leaders and she showed that woman can lead just as good as men and do great things.In 2000 she was voted the best prime minister of India history
