Nadia Comaneci was born in Onesti, Romania to Gheorghe and Stefania-Alexandrina Comaneci. Nadia was the first women to receive a perfect score in the Olympics. She earned a total of seven perfect 10’s. She won three gold medals on the uneven bars, beam, the all-around, and a bronze medal on floor. She told the world that girls can be great in gymnastics too and that it’s not just a men’s sport. In her time period girls weren’t known for doing gymnastics or sports for that matter. She opened up possibilities for other girls to do gymnastics.
Bela Karolyi( now none as the best coach ever in gymnastics history) visited Nadia’s school and noticed that she could do many tricks and tumbling passes. He asked if she wanted to come to his gymnastics school and train. Nadia instantly responded and said yes. She asked her parents and her mom was all for it and was excited for this opportunity, but her dad wasn’t really sure about the whole idea. He tried to talk her out of it. Nadia had her mind set though and wanted to do gymnastics. Her dad finally let her.
When Nadia was about eight or nine, her dad tried to pull her out of the sport. He was pretty mad and didn’t like that his daughter was never home and wasn’t learning things that other normal girls learn, like how to clean the house and learn how to take care of a family. She became upset because she had fallen in love with the sport and her dad wouldn’t let her do it. Her father realized how much she loved it and let her continue with the sport. Nadia Comaneci definitely changed the sport of gymnastics.
