Carrie Chapman Catt- Baylee Hoegh
Women today dont even have to think twice about being able to vote, that wasnt the case almost a hundred years ago. Many women made an influence during the women`s suffrage movement in the United States. Carrie Chapman Catt was one of the many women who fought endlessly for women`s rights. Not only did she serve as president of the National American Women Association she was also the founder of the league of women voters and the International Alliance of Women.
Born in Wisconson but at an early age moved to Charles City, Iowa, Carrie Chapman Catt grew up with an interest of wanting to be a doctor. After graduating highschool she attended Iowa State College,and was a member of Pi Beta Phi which sparked her interest in creating opportunities for women to have a voice. After graduating college Carrie became the first female superintendent in Mason City, Iowa school district. Carrie`s first husband led her to be a newspaper reporter she was soon widowed, then married to George Catt which encouraged Carrie to become apart of the women`s suffrage.
Serving as an officer in the Iowa Women Suffrage Association, Carrie found herself getting involved. In 1890 she spoke at the NAWSA in Washingtion D.C. Which led her into her first presidency for National American Womens Suffrage Association. During her second term in 1915 as president, Carrie won the backing of the U.S. senate, house and state support for the 19th amendment. After receiving support from President Woodrow Wilson and spending countless hours lobbying for the 19th amendment it was adoptive into the U.S. consittution on August 20, 1920.
In 1920, Carrie founded the league of Womens Voters, and she also help found the International Women Suffrage Alliance. She was always encouraging women to take advantage of their rights to vote. With all her courage and hard fought battles,and along with all the other brave women who helped, women in the U.S. now have the right to vote.
