Earthquake in Chile

A terrible earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 woke residents up in Santiago Chile Saturday morning. So far authorities are aware of more than 300 deaths, the number is sure to raise. The quake could have lasted any where from ten to thirty seconds. It was followed by 76 aftershocks with a great magnitude of 4.9 or higher.

Most of the residents who owned homes that weren’t affected much by the quakes, refused to go back into their homes that night, just in case they happened to weaken and topple over on them. This earthquake was expected to also cause great tsunamis in Hawaii and on the coast of China, but so far the expected tsunamis have cause small, harmless waves. People are still staying alert and watching the coast just in case next rounds of waves are stronger.

The President, Michelle Bachelet, has delayed the start of school because much of the highway is damaged in several areas, and thousands of houses and buildings have fallen over. Over two-million of the residents have been affected in some way or another, black outs have been happening all over, and phone lines are out in several areas, leaving families frantic to find out if their loved ones have survived.
