World Trade Center Attack in 1993
The World Trade Center was two towering skyscrapers in Manhattan, New York. Both of the towers were going to end up being taller than the Empire State builds which stands at 1250 feet and the World Trade Center was going to be 1360 feet. Construction began in February 1967. The last piece of steel was put in place on the north tower on December 23, 1970. The last piece in the south tower was put in place in July of the next year. There were many complaints about the tower getting built such as people thinking that a plane would crash into it. The engineers knew this seeing how a small plane had already crashed into the Empire State building. They made sure it would be able to support a fully loaded 707 which was the biggest plane at the time.
On February 26, 1993 terrorists parked a rented van with a bomb that had the power of 2,200 pounds of tnt. They parked in the parking garage two floors down the north tower. When they blew it up 6 casualties were recorded while there were around a 1000 others were injured, the total cost of damage ended up being around 600 million in damage. At that time it was considered one of the worst terrorist attacks of that time but that was nothing compared to what was going to happen 8 years later. After that bombing multiple security measures were placed to make sure something like that would never happen again. Some things that were done was limited access to the parking lots and electronic identification for people that were living in the building.Other things were battery powered lights and emergency command centers foreach building. All that costed around 700 million dollars.
