Black History Month
Colin Powell was the 65th U.S. Secretary of State and general of the U.S. Army. He was President Bush’s secretary of state during his first term as president. Powell was the firstAfrican-American to be the secretary of state, and to on The Joint Chiefs ofStaff. He held some high-rankingmilitary positions during his time with the military.
Powell was born in Harlem, New York, to parents that immigrated from Jamaica. He attained his masters from George Washington University after fighting in Vietnam.
He got into the military through the ROTC. After graduating from City College, he became an Army Second Lieutenant. During his time in Vietnam, he served as a captain for the army. Powell was wounded during his first tour, but returned for a second as a Major. In1989, Powell earned the rank of a General, and later became Commander in Chieffor a short while.
I think that Colin Powell is a very inspirational man and a good role model. He definitely showed how far African Americans have come. I am sure he is paving the way for many other African Americans.
