What its about- How discrimination changed in the 19 and 20 century. In the 1900s there was a poll tax which made people pay a tax before they voted. African americans were often poor so they couldnt vote. But the grandfather clause gave african americans the right to vote if their grandfather was born before a certain date, even if they couldnt pay the tax. In the 1870s and 1880s the Jim Crow laws were put into effect which segregated blacks and whites. In 1900 a race riot erupted in New York City. Between 1882 and 1892 1,400 african americans were killed without trial.
