major events leading up to the civil war-
Starting in the year 1787, slavery was starting to become banned or not allowed in the northwest territory which made the Ohio River the boundry line between free and slave territory between the Appalachian Mountains and the Missippi River. Also the Mason and Dixon line remains to divide the east.

In 1798, Thomas Jefferson along with James Madison got together and wrote out the Kentucky and the Virginia resolutions.
In 1801, Gabriel Prosser created what became known as the Gabriel Plot which was that he would get a rebellious group of slaves and try to run to freedom, when Gabriel was betrayed by some other slaves he was hung along with his two brothers and 23 other slaves.
In 1804, New Jersey, the last of all the northern states, finally states that they are abolishing slavery.
In 1808, the congress was beginning to outlaw the international slave trade and after they did so they brought in the Royal Navy and the U.S. Navy to enforce the prohibition.
In 1816, the american colonization society formed to send all freed slaves to liberia and about 12,000 had been sent, the society was led by James Monroe and Henry Clay along with other slave owners.
before i did this research project i did not know much about any of this but after i did i know alot more than i did before and i feel proud of that. I learned that new jersey was the last northern state to abolish slavery. Before i learned any of this i did not come close to thinking that slave owners would be the ones to lead a society to help free slaves.
