Saving Private Ryan
The movie begins at the battle of Normandy Beach. There's a lot of fighting, and many Americans are killed in battle. The scene switched back to the U.S. offices where an employee notices that three of the deceased letters are being sent to the same family. Three sons from the Ryan family were killed at Normandy beach, and the other son is missing. Inspired by a letter from Pres. Lincoln written during the civil war for a similar situation, a team is sent to go out and locate Prvt James Ryan, the missing son, and bring him home. On this mission, a few of the men are killed, and the rest start to wonder if the mission is worth the life of just one soldier. As they keep searching, they encounter a man they believe to be the Ryan they're looking for, but it turns out to be just someone with the same last name. They continue their search and during a squabble with German forces, another member of the team is killed. They take one of the Germans prisoner and force him to dig the grave of their teammate. In the end, their leader lets him go to the surprise of the remaining soldiers who planned on shooting him. Later when they do find Prvt Ryan and tell him about his family, he refuses to go home on the account that it would be unfair to leave his teammates and that he's sure his mother would understand. In the final major battle of the movie, almost everyone is killed save for Ryan and the translator that was traveling with them. The leader of the rescue group was killed in the end by the German he had set free. The end of the movie ties around to the beginning with an elderly Prvt Ryan crying at the rescue squad leader's grave, hoping he made his life worth their efforts.
4/5 stars. It was a very emotional movie, but I think the fighting was dragged out to long sometimes. It could have been shorter and still just as good. The complete circle ending with Miller's grave was genius though, and I really enjoyed the story, even if everything was dragged out.
