The Monuments Men is a movie set in WWII that shows another side of the war that is not as well known. This group of men have a mission to save works of art that are being destroyed by the Nazi army. These men all have a passion for art and want the art to be preserved so future generations can see the cultures and lifestyles of the past. At the start of their mission, they don’t know where to look for these priceless pieces of art but with new information, they are able to find that the art was being held in mines across Germany. As they are finding more art, the Germans are quickly losing the war and are destroying everything they still have. The Monuments Men find the most priceless pieces and bring them back to their original homes before too much of it can be destroyed.
One reason I enjoyed this movie was how different it was from other war movies. Many other movies that are set during wars are focused on the fighting and all of the action but this one is not. It is telling the behind the scenes story of where all of the art went and what was going to be done with it. Unlike many movies, it wasn’t all about fighting the enemy, it was about doing something that would be greatly appreciated for generations to come.
Another thing I liked was how hard the group of men worked toward their goal. They knew that their mission could possibly fail and what they were doing was dangerous, yet they still did everything they could to get the art back. The actors did a good job showing the characters’ emotions and establishing what about them made them want to keep working, even if one of their group died. They risked their lives, and even risked leaving their families to work toward a cause that was bigger than them. What they did was very important and by working hard and risking their lives, they saved thousands of pieces of priceless art.
I also enjoyed how the group of men became really good friends throughout the movie. Some of them already knew each other, but some did not. While working together, they created bonds that helped them work together better and made them risk their lives for each other. When one of them died, they were deeply saddened, but used their sadness to work toward their goal. They knew they couldn’t let their friends die for nothing so they worked harder than ever to make sure they reached their goal. Together, this group of men saved many pieces of art and grew friendships by doing it.
