Here is a list of my top 10 events that happended in the past decade.1. September 11, 2001: Terrorists hijacked two passenger planes and flew them into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Both of the skyscrapers collapsed to the ground resulting in the deaths of over 2,700 people. Terrorists also hijacked two other passenger planes including one that flew into the Pentagon and killed 125 people. The other was a United Airlines flight that crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers and crew tried to regain the control of the hijacked plane killing all 64 people on board.
2. August 23-29, 2005: Hurricane Katrina forms over the Bahamas and becomes a category 5 hurricane. The storm hammered the eastern United States including Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. One of the hardest hit and most devastated areas was New Orleans, Louisiana where Hurricane Katrina killed more than 1,800 people and caused over $115 billion in damage.3. December 26, 2004: One of the deadliest tsunamis ever devastated countries surrounding the Indian Ocean. Giant walls of water crashed onto the coastal areas of over 11 countries resulting in the deaths of over 150,000 people and displacing millions of others.
4. February 1, 2003: NASA’s space shuttle Columbia disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere after what would have been its 28th mission. All seven of the astronauts on board died.
5. January 20, 2009: Democrat candidate, Barack Obama is inaugurated as the 44th president of the United States as well as the first African-American to ever be elected.6. January 15, 2009: The pilot of the US Airways Flight 1549 makes an emergency landing into the Hudson River not long after taking off from LaGuardia Airport in New York City. The landing was successful and all of the passengers and crew members survived.7. June 25, 2009: Michael Jackson, recording artist, entertainer, and “King of Pop” dies from cardiac arrest in his home in Neverland at the age of 50. Some say the death was a result of his addiction to pain killers after an accident during his filming of a Pepsi commercial but coroners ruled it a homicide. He leaves behind his three children, Paris, Prince, and Blanket.8. September 4, 2006: Australian naturalist and television’s “Crocodile Hunter”, Steve Irwin dies after being pierced in the heart by the poisonous tail of a stingray. Irwin was swimming with the creature while shooting a new TV show on the Great Barrier Reef and was videotaped pulling the tail out of his chest right before he lost consciousness.
9. A Nigerian man attempts to bomb a Northwest Airlines flight by packing explosives into the crotch of his underwear. The suspect was caught when his seat began to catch on fire.10. January 26, 2009: Nadya Suleman gives birth to octuplets after receiving in vitro fertilization. The single mother had given birth to 6 other children ranging in ages from 2 through 7. Suleman’s mother claims that her daughter had been obsessed with having children since she was a teenager.
