Interstate-Highway System

It was authorized by the federal-aid highway act of 1956. The original idea for the plan was in 1921 when the army was told to create a bunch of roads needed for self defense, then it took off into this great big idea of a interstate system. The Interstate-Highway System is a network of highways(freeways or interstates) that was started by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It is the largest public works system in the world. System has a total length of 46,876 miles, which is an unimaginable amount of road. The interstates are built, owned, and operated by the state it is in. The interstates have many different uses, from families driving to vacations, family events, sports games, or trucks transporting goods through the interstate.

Plans for a new system of superhighways or known as interstates had begun in the 30's. The interstate highway system ended up costing around $114 billion running the course of 35 years. The speed limits on the highways and interstates are the highest of all the roads. In Iowa the highway speed limit is 55 mph and the interstate speed limit is 70 mph. Now a day, it seems like there is always some sort of construction happening on the interstates or highways. There is unlimited opportunities on the roads with the interstate highway systems. They have cut plenty of time off trips for people and they are very beneficial when wanting to drive to another state rather than flying which costs a lot of money. Although we have to pay taxes toward the interstate system which feeds off 90% federal tax and 10% state tax, you have to have the understanding that without these road systems our abilities to travel and get places would be very restricted compared to how it is now.
