This Thursday (October 22nd) a tragedy occurred at the Circle Centre Mall in Indianapolis, Indiana. It was during the National FFA Convention, early in the afternoon (approx. 2:45pm), when 16-year-old Phillip Caler fell almost 3 stories (approx. 40 feet) from a guard rail by an escalator all the way down to the bottom floor. Witnesses at the busy mall were shocked, and several called the police.Bystanders said the fall was unintentional; none of the people around him were thought to cause the fall. He was apparently only messing around on the guard rail where it met the moving escalator rail when he lost his balance. Another theory of the cause of the fall was that his jacket got caught on the moving part of the rail and pulled him over. I think either one is perfectly logical.Phillip was a high school sophomore from Booker, Texas. He was on the football team and the basketball team, plus FFA; he was a very involved student. After the accident, he was taken to the Methodist Hospital, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was in critical condition, obviously (while falling he also hit his head on the guard rail of the floor below him before actually hitting the ground floor). He was still alive when they took him to the hospital, and he continued to survive, unconscious and with internal bleeding. Reports over the last few days have said that the boy is improving; hopes are high and prayers are flying everywhere. This guy was apparently very nice, a well-behaved kid, coming from a small town community where everyone knows everyone else... its also extremely tragic for the citizens of Booker, and Phillips family and close friends. I know what its like to lose someone close to you suddenly, so i can definitely relate. =( But fortunately for them, Phillip is still alive and hopefully he's going to get better.
