It was about the war in the Pacific. The movie started out with a bunch of Americans being held in POW camps by the Japanese. The Japanese were starving and abusing the Americans. They had told the Americans that they had no food or medicine. One day when the Japanese left the camp. The Americans broke into one of the buildings a found a stash of medicine in a back room. So they grab everything and sit outside the building. Then the Japanese come back and see them, but surprisingly nobody is killed. The leader of the Japanese at the camp says that if one American tries to escape, then ten Americans will be killed.
Later on, the Japanese catch somebody trying to escape, and so they line ten Americans up, and kill them. Most of the POW's can't take the emotional stress by this point.
A group of U.S. Army Rangers decide to raid the POW camp and try to save the Americans. The rangers team up with some Filipino rebels and start the raid. They wait till night, since they know that would be the best time to hide the POW's. The rangers had to rescue 500 POW's so it was going to be no easy task. They sneak up on the Japanese, and kill a lot of them, before they even know what is going on. It takes a few hours to kill off the Japanese. The battle ends with only one Army Ranger dying. The Rangers rescue all of the POW's and return them to a hospital.
I thought The Great Raid was a good movie. It really showed what the soldiers went through being a prisoner of war.
