The terrorist attacks to America on 9/11 devastated our country. It affected our country in many different ways. Some of effects came right after the attack, some came many years later.
Some of the short term effects of the attacks were obvious things like the fear of more attacks for a while, and also the fear of the Middle East. That day, all airplanes were forced down. If there were any airplanes still up, they were shot down. No flights were allowed to take off that day. This didn’t change for some period of time! It took a few weeks until they let flights take off and even more weeks until people weren’t terrified of taking a plane. Some businesses and some schools shut down around the areas that were attacked. The economic effects of this attack was unbelievable. As you can see in the picture, there was a huge drop in that company, and that’s just one company. Late night shows were discontinued for a few weeks and so were the NFL football games.
Eventually, people decided that the best way to get past this incident was to move forward and continue on with life. TV shows were aired again, schools and businesses re-opened. But, people don’t just forget about an event like this. There were also many long term effects. Over the last decade, there have been many studies conducted. These were studies about the people who were around the WTC when they were hit. They showed that people who were around there at this time had developed chronic, and often co-occurring mental health conditions. 20% of adults who were exposed to the disaster had developed PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). People in this category were people like; the emergency responders that experienced it first-hand, the people that lost their jobs, and obviously, the survivors that were actually in the building. There were also cases of respiratory illness, heart disease, and even cancer from the dust inhalation. Security has tightened up at airports. There was also more than a decade long war that resulted from this.
9/11 was a traumatic experience that effected almost everybody in the U.S. We came together during and after this and we showed the terrorists that we weren’t scared. After doing my research for this paper, I learned many new things. There were many more things that happened other than just buildings being destroy and losing many lives. Obviously, these are bad things, but many other things happened. People lost their jobs, some now have some very serious diseases, and we have lost even more lives due to war and these illnesses. It was more serious than I honestly thought it was. 9/11 is something that people will never forget.
