The Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was established to make sure that everything is put on products such as warning labels. They make sure the products are safe to be dispersed to buyers. This act was passed in 1938 due to over 100 deaths caused by a sulfanilamide medication in which to make the medicine disolve quicker they added a widely use solvent, diethylene glycol. This act replaced the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.This leads me to how the Pure Food and Drug Act got started. This required, according to wikipedia, the inspection of meat and forbade the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated food products and poisonous patent medicines. The main point of the act was to make sure that all products were labeled correctly. Probably one of the most famous of these warning labels is the Coca-Cola product containing an excessive amount of caffeine and cocaine in it. As a result of a court case, the caffeine level in the soda was reduced.I believe that this act is one of the most important in our history. If it wasnt for this act being passed, a lot of companies who be putting yucky stuff in their products without the knowing of the consumer. Especially those with allergies, the warning labels helped a lot showing what the product may contain.
