Cold war- Define
- A political, strategic and ideological struggle between the US and Soviet Union from 1945-1990
- Spread throughout the world- Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America
Communism-
- Practice and Theory- Everyone is equal
- China, North Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, Laos
Democracy- Form of government in which the people have a say
- United States
Capitalism- Citizen ownership of businesses,
- Weak- You can fail, income inequality United States
- Strength- Freedom of price, the harder you work the more you make, room for improvement
Socialism- Economic system that promotes equality, government ownership of businesses
- School systems in the US
- Strength- Everything is provided for you
- Weakness- Lack of motivation
Causes of the Cold War-
- Different political systems
- US is based on democracy, capitalism and freedom
- USSR is based on dictatorship, communism and control
- The Red Scare- 1919
- Right after WWI
- 1920- stopped immigration to stop communist from coming in
- Tried to keep communism from taking over our country
- Both thought their system was better and distrusted the others intentions
- Stalin despised capitalism
- Distrust during WWII

- Stalin was mad because he thought we(US) were playing games when he thought we should be invading France

- This pushed for the cold war
- Stalin, Churchill, and Roosevelt met for the last time

Post WWII/Cold War Goals for US
- Wanted to promote open markets for US goods to prevent another depression
- Promote democracy throughout the world, especially in Asia and Africa
- Stop the spread of communism
- Policy of Containment- We wanted to contain communism
Soviet Union's goals
- Wanted to create greater security for itself
- Lost tens of millions of people in WWII and Stalin's purge
- Feared a strong Germany
- Establish defensible borders
- Encourage friendly governments on its borders
- Spread communism around the world
Truman Doctrine-
- British were helping the Greek government fight against communist
- US gave Greece large amounts of weapons and supplies and by 1949 had defeated the communists
