Monday- US after WW1

  • U.S. never signed the Treaty of Versailles
  • Wilson (Dem) vs Congress (Republican controlled)
  • Join the League of Nations or go back to isolationism?
  • Republican Warren Harding won the 1920 Presidential election with a promise to "Return to Normalcy"
  • The U.S. went back to focusing on America in the 1920's and 1930's

Neutrality in General

  • The Neutrality Acts were passed in the 1930's in a response to the issues in Europe and Asia that lead to WW2
  • Passed to ensure that the U.S. would not become involved in any world conflicts.

America First Committee- made the U.S. think about the U.S. first and no other countries besides the U.S.

Neutrality Acts

  • Neutrality Act of 1935- stop trading with countries at war
  • Neutrality Act of 1936- Stop loaning money to countries at war
  • Neutrality Act of 1937- Cash and Carry System- weapons not included
  • Neutrality Act of 1939- Cash and Carry System- weapons included

Bases for Destoyers

  • U.S. gave Great Britain in exchange for land rights for naval or air base purposes

End of U.S. Neutrality-Lend Lease Act

  • The end of the neutraltiy for the U.S.
  • This act allowed the U.S. to sell, lend or give war materials to nations the U.S. wanted to support.
  • $50 billion dollars
  • Gave out weapons, materials, food, services tp Great Britian, Russia, China and central South America.

Selective Training and Service Act

  • Passed in September, 1940 adn ended in 1947
  • Required that men between the ages 21 and 35 register for the draft.
  • Extended to all men afed 19-45 once U.S. entered war
  • First peacetime draft in U.S. history

 

Tuesday- How did the U.S./Allies fight back against U-boat Warfare

  • Hunter-killer groups would be formed around an escort aircraft carrier that would provide aerial reconnaissance and air cover for the convoy group

  • System in which German transferred their information through codes

D-day Facts

June 6th, 1944

The D stands for "Day" since the final invasion date was unknokn and weather dependent

156,000 allied troops for the united states, United kingdom, cnacda, free france and Norway

Yalta Conference

  • Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt met at Yalta, USSR to plan what should happen when the war ended.
  • Agreed on the following
  • United Nationas
  • Germany divided into four zones
  • Free elections in Europe
  • USSR promised to join the fight against Japan.

  • Rosie the Riveter- represented women worker in WW2

  • Controlled prices of goods
  • Food rationing on sugar and meat; clothing rationing restriced sik and nylon
  • Gasoline rationing

  • Failure
