  • They do move a long way through China
  • China is still mad about Japan's invasion
  • Killed about 6,000,000 overall throughout the war

Rape of Nanking

  • Nanking was completely flattened
  • Capitol of China
  • Mass killing of up to 300,000
  • 20,000 women/girls raped
  • Mass looting and arson
  • Horrific and attrocious acts commited

Emperor Hirohito

  • Ultimate leader of Japan
  • Ruled until death in '89
  • The emperor was seen as a god figure in older times
  • Hirohito did say it was ok to attack Pearl Harbor
  • Hirohito was bargained that he could stay emperor if he admitted he wasn't a god, and surrendered
    • The first time the emperor ever spoke to anybody
  • He's a figurehead now and doesn't have too much power
  • Elected reps now
  • Not put to death because the US didn't want them turning to communism

Hideki Tojo

  • Became leader just before Pearl Harbor Attack
  • He was forced out when Japan started losing
  • He never had as much power as Hitler or Stalin
  • Ruled in the name of the Emperor
  • Supported Axis alliance and expansion
  • Tried to diplomatically talk to US, but we wouldn't listen
  • Forced out in July, 1944

  • Then we let them buy with our delivery

  • They borrow, they return after
  • If broken, they still had to replace

The Road to Pearl Harbor

Admiral Yamamoto

  • They had to cross the Pacific in secret
  • Could not be found out
  • Japan only had the one pacific navy
  • Ours was slightly smaller because of the theater split
  • They wanted to destroy the base
  • The admiral knew that Japan couldn't beat the US but that if they do attack, they have to knock us out of the war early
  • Dec. 7, 1941 - Date at attack
  • Attacks at 7:40 AM, and 8:50 AM
    • They canceled a third one so that they could get home quickly
    • Japan major victory
    • US declares war on Japan
    • Germany and Italy declare war on us
    • We declare war on them
  • All eight were damaged, with only four being sunk
  • Threes of many other were damaged
  • 2400 killed, 1300 wounded
  • It didn't knock us out of the war
  • All of our carriers were out to sea
  • Japan attacked our closely packed boats
  • We were concerned about the Japanese sabotaging our boats
