The Cold War 1945-1990
US vs Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
Definition- A political, strategic and ideological struggle between the US and Soviet Union. Spread throughout the world, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Communism- Government controls everything. (Vietnam, China, North Korea.)
Democracy- The people have the power. Not ran by a government.
Capitalism- Economic system. People own businesses, people control. Strength- Anyone can do it. Weakness- Leads to income inequality.
Socialism- Government would control production.
Causes of the Cold War- Different political systems. US is based on democracy, capitalism, and freedom.
- USSR- is based on dictatorship, communism and control.
- 1919 Red Scare- US fearful of becoming communism. Stopped immigration.
- Stalin despised communism.
- Stalin breaking his promise to allow free elections to the Yalta Conference.
- American fear of a communist attack and USSR fear of a US attack. USSR fear of the atomic bomb. USSR actions in their German zone. USSR goal to spread communism around the world.
- This feeling of suspicion lead to mutual distrust and this did a great deal to deepen the Cold War.
Truman Doctrine
Iron Curtain Speech- Speech given by Winston Churchill during the Cold War period. He reveals his disapproval of the Soviet Unions policies. Two worlds, Western Europe and Eastern Europe. One side communist, and one democracy.
Domino Theory- (Affect) if one country followed communist, the whole country would follow.
Containment- Was a policy to prevent the spread of communism aboard.
Marshall Plan- US helped out Europe and Asia, an estimated 120 billion dollars in aid. America helped rebuild Europe and Asia after WW2.
Mutual- One side will attack the other side, both sides will be destroyed.
Warsaw Pact- Basically a pact that stated all participating countries were going to cooperate and coexist in mutual friendship and mutual assistance. Organized in 1955. In answer to NATO the Warsaw Pact included East Germany, Hungary. Signed by communist countries.
CIA- The Central Intelligence Agency. A government organization in the US that collects secret information about other countries.
KGB- Military service and was governed by army laws and regulations.
Peaceful Coexistence- Competition without war. Between communist and non- communist nations.
Glasnost- The law in the Soviet Union of talking about political happenings freely, encouraged open debates.
Nuclear Weapons- US, Russia, United Kingdom, China, France. India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, Iran.
