Cold war

Definition of cold war- a political, strategic and ideological struggle between the US and the SU. Spread throughout the world-Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. 

Communism vs. Democracy: Democracy-We have freedom of religion, it’s about freedom, about choice; Communism- Theory: Gov. has all the power in say in what goes on… some don’t allow some freedoms, all about gov. and controlling.

Socialism vs. Capitalism: Capitalism- People own and control some things; Socialism- Gov. controls and owns businesses and other things.

 

Not fair that like 70% have the wealth and the 30% have the poor

Positive socialism- they will say everyone is the same but makes it like, why work hard if we are all getting the same

Stalin takes over for Linen- kills’ people he doesn’t trust

Communism you will get but may take time

Social- if you have money you may get them

Cause of the cold war

The difference of opinion, US based on democracy, capitalism and freedom, USSR based on dictatorship and communism and control. The red scare 1919 both thought their system was better and distrusted the others intentions

Yalta Conference- Before the end of the WWII, Stalin lies about free voting or whatever

Stalin breaking his promise to allow free elections at the Yalta conference, American fear of a communist attack, (RED SCARE) and the USSR fear of US attack

Cold war was fueled by what happened in Germany during the time

USSR fear of atomic bomb, actions in their German zone, goal to spread communism around the world, this feeling of suspicion lead to mutual distrust and this did a great deal to depend the cold war

East- communist (gov) West- democratic (people)

Post goals for US

Wanted to promote open markets for us goods to prevent another depression, promaote democracy thought the world, especially in Asia and Africa, stop the spread of communism, policy of containment (official)

Post goals for the USSR

Wanted to create greater security for itself, lost millions of people in WWII and Stalin’s purges, feared a strong Germany, established defensible borders, encourage friendly governments on its borders, spread communism around the world, wanted to surrounded themselves with allies with safety and protection

VOCABULARY:

Domino effect 1947- when something happens, it will be a domino effect and different events will lead up to it.

Policy of containment 1947- US policy to prevent the spread of communism. Concern of domino effect brought about this.

The Truman doctrine 1947- Stated the US would help countries with military and economic aid if they were threatened by communism or SU. It was an effort to stop communism form spreading. Mainly aimed at Grease and Turkey.

The Marshall Plan 1948-1952- After WWII it was a program that the US helped rebuild and gave European countries economic support. Why would we do this? So they wouldn’t turn communist.

Brinkmanship- Tactic to push to so much to a breaking point or to the brink, but not quite going over. If you’re going to use this tactic, better be ready for war if they don’t back down.

Mutual Assured Destruction 1955 early 1960’s- Using strong weapons to create an explosion to destroy opposing sides.

Massive Retaliation/ Mutual Deterrence- US launches nukes to SU and then they will do it back. Since we know we are all going to die, we can never use nuclear weapons. They have become a defensive weapon. Proved you can fight war without nuclear weapons.

N.A.T.O. - North Atlantic Treaty Organization also called North Atlantic Alliance. Military formed between 28 nations to enforce North Atlantic Treaty +try to stop communism +security against SU. US, GB, WG, Italy, France, Canada. Basically our alliance with Western Europe.

Warsaw Treaty Organization- An alliance between the SU and most Eastern European countries to counterbalance the alliance called NATO. Hungry, Chezklavakia, Romania. Parts of Germany. Dissolved eventually, not around today.

Iron Curtain Speech 1946- Churchill, gives speech part of Europe behind the curtain was controlled by SU and forcing the little countries to be communist

CIA- intelligence gathering information and went and spied and gathered information about other countries.

KJB- CIA of the SU

Peaceful Coexistence 1960- theory from the SU, capitalism and communism don’t work together, but they can still live peacefully next to each other. Don’t interfere in each other’s affairs.

Destalinization- destroying everything about Stalin and not wanting people to want to kill for a solution

DE taunt- A French word meaning release from tensions usually in political situations.

Perestroika 1960 - the fixing or stabilizing the economy political systems happening

Glasnost- Openness of gov. and let people have more say instead of so secretive.

France Russia China FB US- Powers of the word, five countries that have nuclear weapons

Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty 1970- over all goals: prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology, promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, and further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament.

CIA- located in Langley, illegal to have any operations in the country has to be outside. They pretty much need to know things, like Gov. Hackers. Waterboarding, put a towel over their head and like drown them, etc.

Nuclear Test Ban Treaty 1963- The banning of all nuclear practices and signed was US, SU, and UK. The only place they could test was underground.

Strategic Arms Limitation Talks 1972- An agreement between SU and US to stop trying to develop missiles for nuclear weapon transport.

Anti- Biolistic Missile- On impact it just blows up. Saying that each military could only have and use 100 of these missiles.

The missile defense system 1990’s- to prevent nuclear bombs landing in a country
