US vs Union of Soviet Union Socialist Republics
- A political, strategic and ideological struggle between the US and the Soviet Union. Spread throughout the world-Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America.
- Communism vs. Democracy-
- Communism- North Korea, Vietnam, Louse, Cuba, China
- The Practice of Communism- The government is in charge; no free speech. Dictator or small group of people run the govt.
- The Theory of Communism- Govt disbands and the people are in control.
- Democracy-The people have the power/say; A govt FOR the people.
- Socialism vs. Capitalism-
- Socialism-Govt controls goods and services; businesses. Everyone is equal. Destroys incentive to work hard.
- Capitalism- Private ownership of goods and services; when people own businesses instead of the govt. Income Inequality; some people have more money than others.
- The theory never happened because Vladimir Lenin died in 1924 and Stalin came to power; killed millions of peeps.
Causes of Cold War-
- Different Political Systems
- -US based on Democracy, Capitalism and Freedom.
- -USSR based on Dictatorship, Communism and Control
- The Red Scare-1919
- Both thought their system was better and distrusted the others intentions
- Stalin despised Capitalism.
- Stalin breaking his promise to allow free elections at the Yalta Conference
- Americans fear of a Communist attack (Red Scare) and USSR's fear of a US attack
- USSR's fear of the Atomic Bomb
- USSR's actions in their German Zone
- USSR's goal to spread Communism around the world
- This feeling of suspicion lead to mutual distrust and this did a great deal to deepen the Cold War
- When Stalin and Hitler agreed to take over Poland together in 1939
US Cold War Goals-
- Promote Open Markets for US goods to prevent another Depression
- Promote Democracy throughout the world, especially in Asia and Africa
- Stop the spread of Communism- Policy of Containment.
Soviet Cold War Goals-
- Create greater security for themselves
- -Lost tens of millions of people in WW2 and Stalin's Purges
- -Feared a strong Germany
- Establish defensible Borders
- Encourage friendly governments on its borders
- Spread Communism around the world
