Monday- No school 

Tuesday- Semester test questions over the Cold War-

- Understand the causes, effects, goals and major events of the Cold War

-Understand the causes,effects, and major events of the Korean Conflict

- Understand the causes,effects and major events of the Vietnam conflict

Democracy- the people have the right to vote and can speak out

Communism- government that controls everything. No freedom of speech or anything but everyone is equal.

China, North Korea, Laos, Cuba, Vietnam

Capitalism- people own businesses and government doesn't own it.

Socialism- Government is involved with businesses and controls it 

Vladimir Lennin- first leader of the Soviet Union- died- power struggle- Joseph Stalin is the leader 

- didn't trust people and killed millions 

Causes of the Cold War- US is based on demovracy, capitalism and freedom 

- USSR is based on dictatorship. communism and control 

- The Red Scare 

- Both thought their system was better and distrusted the others intentions- Stalin despised capitalism 

- Stalin breaking his promise to allow free elections at the Yalta Conference in Eastern Europe 

- Scared to death of the atomic bomb- USSR's goal to spread communism around the world 

Wednesday- Iron Curtain-  Europe has been divided, separating communist countries from democratic countries 

- Domino effect- if one country fell to communism all of them would 

Containment- was a policy to prevent the spread of communism abroad 

Truman Doctrine- was a united states policy to stop soviet expansion during the Cold War- the US would provide political, military and economic help to democratic countries and that needed help from us to defeat the communists  

Marshall Plan- America helped rebuild Europe and Asia after WWII- to stop the spread of communism 

Mutual Assured Destruction- US doctrine would say that if any country were to use nuclear weapons on each other will both be totally destroyed. A nuclear war cannot happen.

Massive Retaliation- Both sides retaliating back to each other with full force- no one will use the nuclear weapons because we will all die.

Nato- ( North Atlantic Treaty Organization)- an agreement between membered areas, mainly in North America and Europe, that provide a collective defenses from outside attacks

-US, Canada, France, England 

Thursday- Warsaw pact- A military alliance of communist nations of EAstern Europe. Organized in 1955 in answer to NATO. Treaty signed by a bunch of communist countries that helps them unite together in common and basic needs. 

CIA- A government organization in the US that collects secret information about other countries

Peaceful Coexistence- Competition without war between communist and non-communist nations 

De- Stalinization- realized what Stalin did was wrong-realized they needed to change a little bit, took down Stalin's statues and laws. 

Glasnost- The law in the Soviet Union of talking about political happenings freely; encouraged open debates 

Nuclear Powers of the World- US, Russia, China, France, UK (Original 5) India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, Iran ( Developing) 

Friday- Missile Defense system- an Anti- Rocket/ missile system that can disable or shoot down a projectile being launched. Thought of it was brought up in the cold war. Now used against terrorists 

Detente- relaxing of tension between nations- Countries negotiating to keep peace and end hostility 

Nuclear test ban treaty- treaty that banned the test of all nuclear weapons 

Brinkmanship- going beyond the limit of safety to play a dangerous move before having to stop  

Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty-prevents the spread of nuclear weapons and the use of them in war and to encourage peace and peaceful used of nuclear energy 

SALT 1 TREATY-US/ USSR-1972- froze the number of strategic ballistic missile launchers 

1980's- Ronald REagan announces the Strategic Defense Initiative

Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty- banned underground nuclear testing everywhere
