Monday- no school

Tuesday- Continued Cold War. Causes: Different political systems. US is Democracy and capitalism. USSR is Dictatorship and communism and socialism. The Red Scare 1919. Both thought their systems were better than the other. Stalin hated capitalism. Stalin breaking his promise to allow free elections at the Yalta Conference. American fear of a communist attack. USSR fear of US attack. USSR fear of Atomic bomb. USSR actions in their German zone. USSR goal to spread communism. This feeling of suspicion lead to mutual distrust and this did a great deal to deepen the Cold war. East is commie west is democratic. Goals. Wanted to promote open markets for US goods to prevent another depression. Promote Democracy throughout the world, especially in Asia and Africa. Stop the spread of Communism. Policy of Containment. USSR Goals. Wanted to create greater security for itself. Establish defensible borders. Encourage friendly governments on its borders. Spread communism around the world. Perestroika. 

Wednesday- Key terms.

Domino Theory: If communists control one nation the rest of the world will soon follow suit.

Policy of Containment: US policy to try to stop the spread of Communism.

Truman Doctrine: 1947, The Truman doctrine stated that the US would help other countries in Europe with both military and economic aid if they were threatened by communism or the Soviet Union. It was an effort to  stop communism from spreading to Greece and Turkey.

Marshall Plan: 1948-1952, After World War II US helped rebuild and gave European countries Economic support.

Brinkmanship: The pushing of a dangerous situation to the brink of disaster without going into war.

Mutual Assured Destruction: Using strong weapons to create an explosion to destroy opposing sides used in 1955 and early 1960's.

Massive Retaliation: The massive retaliation after an attack by another.

Mutual Deterrence: The deterrence of using nuclear weapons for fear of starting nuclear war. 

NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Military alliance formed between 28 nations to enforce North Atlantic Treaty. Try to stop communism, Security against Soviet Union. US, GB, West Germany, Canada, and France. 

Warsaw Pact: An alliance between the Soviet Union and most Eastern European countries to counterbalance the alliance called NATO. Dissolved in 1991 after fall of Soviet Union.

Thursday-

Iron curtain- the rest of Europe cut off from eastern communist countries.

KGB-the CIA of Soviet Union

Peaceful Coexistence- saying that capitalist and communist countries don't work together but they can at least just leave each other alone and live beside each other.

Destalinization- getting rid of all Stalin related things in the Soviet Union.

Detente- slight relaxation during the 70's.

Perestroika- rebuilding of Soviet Union and tried to stop the Cold War.

Glasnost- openness in Soviet Union with many other countries

Only 9 countries are allowed to have nuclear weapons- US, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, and Iran.

Friday- 

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty 1970- Prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology

CIA- secret service that spies on other countries for the US

Strategic Arms Limitation- saying that they would limit the manufacturing of nuclear missiles.

Anti ballistic missile- each military agrees to reduce missile defense
