Semester test;

Understand the causes, effects, goals and major events of the Cold war, Korean war and Vietnam conflict.

China, Cuba, North Korea, Laos. 

Causes: 

- Different economic and political systems ( democracy, capitalism and freedom>< dictatorship, communism and control)

- The red scare 1919: 

- Both thought their system was better 

- Yalta conference:  Feb 1945:  Stalin later broke his promise to allow free elections

- USSR's actions in their german zone and goal to spread communism around the world

- feeling of suspicion on both sides

US' Goals during cold war:

- promote open markets for US goods to prevent another depression

- promote democracy

- stop the spread of communism

Soviets' goals:

- wanted to create greater security for itself ( lost million of people)

- establish strong  and easily defensible borders

- spread communism

- wanted allied gov on its borders

Assignments: 

- Domino theory: if one nation comes under communism, the nations nearby will soon be communist too. 1950

- Politic of containment: us policy to prevent the spread of communism in the world.  1947

- Truman doctrine: the USA would help countries in Europe with both military and economic aid if they were threatened by communism or the soviet union. (Greece and Turkey). 1947

- Marshall Plan: the USA helped rebuild and gave European countries economic support. 1948-1952

- Brinkmanship: the pushing of a dangerous situation to the brink of disaster without going to war. (during the whole cold war)

- Mutual assured destruction: using strong weapons to create an explosion to destroy opposite sides.  1955-60's

- Massive retaliations/ Mutual deterrence: using nuclear weapons for defensive purpose only. A country wouldn't go in war with a country that has nuclear missiles.

- NATO: North Atlantic treaty organization:  28 nations signed the treaty, trying to stop the spread of communism and secured the world against Soviet Union. april 4, 1929 (USA, GB, West germany, Canada, France, Belgium...)

- Warsaw Pact: Alliance between the soviet union and most Eastern European countries >< NATO (Hungary, Poland, East Germany, Romania, Bulgaria...) May 4, 1955. dissolved in 1991

- Iron curtain speech: Winston Churchill's speech in 1946. (referring to the borders of eastern and western Europe)

- CIA: Central intelligence agency

- KGB: "the russian CIA and FBI"

- Peaceful coexistence: theory from Soviet Union. Capitalism and communism don't work together but they can't live peacefully next to each other. 1960's

- De-Stalinization: my presentation. Since 1956.

- Detente: release from tension usually in political situations. 

- Perestroika: the fixing or reforming of the economic and political systems. (Gorbachev) 1980's

- Glasnost: policy of being more open to change in the gov. 1985

- countries : USA, France, Russia, China and GB. (+Israel, North Korea, India and Pakistan)

- 15000: nuclear missiles needed to blow the earth. Little boy 32 for LA and 239 419 for the USA.  Tzar Bombe: 1 to blow up LA. 

- Nuclear Non proliferation Treaty: nobody except the first 5 could have nuclear weapons. 1970

-  Nuclear test ban treaty 1963:  Banning of nuclear practices in the US, Soviet Union and United Kingdom (Atmosphere and underwater)

- Strategic arms limitation talks: treaty of 1972: negotiations between the US and the SU.  stop developing missiles to carry nuclear weapons

- Anti Ballistic missile: 1972:  each military could only have and use 100  missiles. 

- Anti ballistic defensive system: detects missiles in the sky and destroy it before it reaches the target. 1990's-2000
