Semester test Cold War questions: Understand the causes, effects, goals, and major events of the Cold War. Understand the causes, effects, and major events of the Korean Conflict. Understand the causes, effects, and major events of the Vietnam Conflict.
Communism vs. Democracy. Democracy is the people get the rights, can vote, etc. Communism- Government is very in control of things. Take away freedom of speech, etc. Redistributing money. China, North Korea, Laos, Vietnam, Cuba (all communist)
Capitalism vs. Socialism. Capitalism- people own businesses. Socialism- government controls business.
Causes of the Cold War- Different political systems. US is based on Democracy, capitalism and freedom. USSR is based on dictatorship, communism, and control. The Red Scare- 1919. Both thought their system was better and distrusted the others intentions. Stalin despised capitalism. Stalin breaking his promise to allow free elections at the Yalta Conference. American fear of a communist attack (Red Scare) and USSR's fear of a US attack. USSR's fear of the atomic bomb. USSR's actions in their German zone. USSR's goal to spread communism around the world. This feeling of suspicion lead to mutual distrust and this did a great deal to deepen the Cold War.

April 8- Present presentations
Iron Curtain Speech- Speech given by Winston Churchill. Reveals his disapproval of the Soviet Union's policies.
Domino Theory Affect- If one country fell to communism, others would follow.
Policy of Containment- Was a policy to prevent the spread of communism abroad.
Truman Doctrine- A US policy to stop Soviet expansion during the Cold War. We would provide political, military, and financial aid to countries that ask.
Marshall Plan- America helped rebuild Europe and Asia after WWII.
Mutual Assured Destruction- If one country attacks another, the one that attacks and defends will get destroyed.
Massive Retaliation- To have someone attack because the other did, vice versa.
NATO- An agreement between membered areas, mainly in NA and EU, that provide a collective defenses from outside attacks.

Warsaw Pact- A pact that stated that all participating countries were going to cooperate and coexist in mutual friendship and mutual assistance. East Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Soviet Union.
KGB- The KGB was the security and intelligence agency of the Soviet Union.
Peaceful Coexistence- Competition without war. Between communist and noncommunist nations.
De-Stalinization- Realized what Stalin did was wrong- realized they needed to change a little bit, took down Stalin's statues and laws.
Glasnost- The law in the Soviet Union of talking about political happenings freely; encouraged open debates.
Nuclear Powers of the World- US, Russia, China, United Kingdom, France. India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel, Iran.
