East- Communist
West- Democratic
Domino Theory- Theory that if one country fell to Communism, the surrounding countries would soon fall
Policy of Containment- Policy issued to prevent the spread of Communism from the USSR
Truman Doctrine- Example of containment of Communism. Gave money and supplies to stop spread. Turkey and Greece especially.
Marshall Plan- Gave money to help European countries economically
Brinkmanship- Pushing situations to the brink of war
Mutual Assured Destruction- Using strong weapons to destroy opposing sides which would assure the destruction of both sides
Massive Retaliation- Fear of massive retaliation keeping countries from using nuclear weapons on each other
NATO(North Atlantic Treaty Organization)- Military alliance formed between 28 countries to stop the spread of Communism. US, GB, West Germany, France, Canada (Western Europe)
Warsaw Pact- Communist treaty/organization during the Cold War. Soviet union and Eastern Europe's alliance against NATO
Iron Curtain speech- Winston Churchill stated that there was a figurative "Iron Curtain" separating Europe from the Communist side and the Free side
KGB- Intelligence organization for the Soviet Union. CIA/FBI of the Soviet Union
Peaceful Coexistence- Democracy and Communism don't work together, but they can still live in peace and without war
De-Stalinization- Getting rid of Stalin's ways; destroying monuments, reforming government, changing policies
Detente- Soviet Union and United States easing tensions in the 70's
Perestroika- Restruction and Reforming (Gorbachev)
Glasnost- More open about the government (Gorbachev)

Nuclear Non-proliferation treaty(1970)- Prevent the spread of Nuclear weapons. Promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Nuclear disarmament
CIA- Intelligence agency based outside of US soil with goals of gathering Intel about foreign affairs
Nuclear test ban treaty(1963)- Banning of all nuclear practices in the US, Soviet Union and the UK
SALT(1972)- Agreement to stop developing nuclear missiles
Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty(1972)- Placed a limit on defensive systems that defend from ballistic missile-delivered nuclear weapons
Missile Defense system- System made for defending countries from Nuclear missile threats
