Wednesday- 

USSR's first atomic bomb test in 1949 - ensures nuclear war will never happen - mutually assured destruction

uS, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Israel 

North Korea - last nuclear test was in 2017. Kim Jong Un said on April 21st, 2018 that North Korea will no longer test nuclear weapons and will be shutting down missile sites - Trump and Un will be meeting soon. 

Iran - turns away from West. If Iran affirms that it will never get nuclear weapons, the West will trade with Iran. 

Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty- JFK 1963 signed. Bans above ground nuclear testing - not below ground. Countries began testing underground. 

Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1970- Prevents the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology. Promote cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Further the goal of achieving nuclear disarmament and general and complete disarmament. 

Anti-Ballistic Missle Teraty (1972)- Limits weapons between US and USSR that would seek out and destroy nuclear weapons once launched. IN the 1980's, PResident Ronald Reagan announced the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) - US withdraws in 2002 under George W. Bush (Withdrew due to missile defense system)

SALT I Treaty- US/USSR Treaty- Leonid Brezhnev and Richard Nixon - Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty- agreed to stop the increase of nuclear weapons.

Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty - 1996. Signed by Bill Clinton - not ratified by the Senate

IAEA- Watchdog of nuclear weapons - looks at nuclear weapons like North Korea and Iran

INF Treaty (1987)- Eliminated nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with intermediate ranges (300-3400 miles) - between US and USSR

START Treaties - START I (1991)- Largest and most complex arms control treaty in history. Resulted in the removal of about 80 percent of all strategic nuclear weapons in existence. START I treaty expires in 2009.

SORT- 2003 Strategic OFfensive Reductions Treaty (between US and RUssia)- stockpile of both deployed and reserve nuclear weapons was to be cut in half by 2012. The goal was achieved in 2007 for US. Lasted from 2003-2011 when New Start took its place. W Bush and Putin agreed on this one.

New START- 2011 - signed by President Obama and Russian President Medvedev - the number of strategic nuclear missile launchers will be reduced by half. A new nispection and verifications ystem will be established. Lasts until 2021.
