Mr Bruns presentation: 

  • New technology makes exploration possible 
  • Shopbuilders designed a new vessel called the caravel, which was sturdier than previous ships 
  • Triangular sails allowed people to sail effectively against the wind
  • Started using the astrolabe and compass so they had a better idea of where they were and where they were going

Jamestown

  • Founders of Jamestown, Virginia in 1607 
  • He was one of the 7 leaders 
  • Took 19 days to find the perfect spot to settle

  • First explorer to MAP the bay 
  • Traveled about 3,000 miles on this journey 

Death 

  • Returned to England after gunpowder explosion "accident?" that destroyed his leg
  • Died in 1631 when he was 51 
  • Was buried in London
