April 2nd - 29th

  • After world war one the U.S. went back to isolationism and wanted to stay out of the European affairs 
  • 5, 9 power pact, and the Kellogg-Braind act (look in previous notes)
  • Neutrality acts kept america out of wars and eventually caused to WWII - America first committee supported this.
  • Neutrality acts - Stopped trading with countries at war, stopped loaning money to countries at war, cash and carry (counties had to pay in cash for goods and had to ship it with their own ships), 
  • Panay Incident Japanese attacked U.S. gunship in china
  • U.S. send people supplies in the lend lease act sent them $650 billion dollars on today's money to allied powers
  • U.S. started a draft in September of 1940 18-45 year olds were drafted to the military.

  • German U-Boats attacked U.S. ships because we were trading with other countries so FDR ordered that any the navy thinks is a treat to sink.
  • Radar and Sonar was used in the convoy system were they would surround the supply ships.
  • The Hunter-Killer groups had corvettes, battle ships, aircraft carriers they would hunt down German U-Boats and destroy them.
  • Depth charges and Hedge hogs were bombs launched into the water to destroy submarines 
  • Enigma was the system in which Germany transferred their info through codes and the code was broken by the bombe
  • D Day was on June 6th 1944 and it was delayed for bad weather for one day, Omaha beach was the beach with the most casualties and the invasion had over 326,000 take place in it, this was the largest amphibious invasion in history
  • 1,500 U.S. troops killed and 2 months after this invasion Germany surrendered
  • The Malmedy Massacre-86 Americans were murdered by German troops in Europe

  • The Women in world war two worked in factories and they did office jobs and non combatant jobs in the war for the military.
  • Their were black and white units this war was segregated 

  • Hollywood in WWII had news reals at the beginning of movies and and they wanted to use propaganda to make us look the best.
  • Famous people would go to the troops and sing, dance, or preform for them.
  • KILROY was a shipping guy and they think he drew this guy on the crates and people started putting it everywhere.

  • The OPA was established to control the Price of goods and they made it that u can only have 5 gallons of gasoline per week.
  • They wanted to save rubber for the war so they didn't want people driving and a lot of people had false stickers to get more gas.
  • Rationed canned foods and other foods so they could go over to WWII to people who are fighting and everyone got food stamps to get their food.
  • the War Production Board helped make more production.
  • The War Bonds were Bonds that were bought and the people would make more money off of it so it was an investment to help pay for the war.

  • The U.S. put the Japanese into camps and they made them work war like jobs
  • Effects of WWII on the U.S. - Got us out of the Great Depression, states start to take more power then the states to help civil rights 

Testing the 20th - 23rd then starting group project on the 70's through the 29th
